9 arrested over passport racket

Nine persons who have obtained money from various persons in order to get passports while omitting usual procedures such as queues, have been arrested by the Police Intelligence units this morning (19), the Ministry of Public Security states.

According to the ministry, complaints have been received that such brokers have approached people near the Immigration and Emigration Department and assured them that their passports could be fixed and given to them without the hassle of queues at a fee of Rs. 25,000.

Public Security Minister – Tiran Alles has yesterday directed intelligence agencies to investigate this matter immediately and the arrests were made accordingly.

Noting such goings on are still underway, the minister had also urged to look into officials who are working together with such racketeers.
