Banks plan a strike next month Featured

Bank employees are planning a strike within the first two weeks of next month, according to Bank Employees Union secretary Ranjan Senanayake.

The move is to protest a government decision to sell shares of the Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank, National Savings Bank, Regional Development Bank, State Mortgage and Investment Bank, Lankaputra Bank and HDFC Bank.

Senanayake said they would receive support from a collective of 19 state and private sector trade unions in their strike action.

He added that their talks with the president on June 20 failed.

The unionist warned of a major protest campaign with public support if the decision was not withdrawn.
