Balasuriya will be asked to explain as to why he had handed over, to the TID, the investigation that was being carried out by the CID.
Court permission is to be obtained for bringing him home from overseas.
The then police chief Jayantha Wickremaratne entrusted the CID and the Mt. Lavinia police with the inquiry into the killing of the ‘Sunday Leader’ editor on 08 January 2009.
As the investigation was underway, Wickremaratne retired and his successor Balasuriya handed over the investigation to the TID, although there was no proof that the journalist had been under threat by the LTTE.
The TID, without any evidence, arrested a person by the name Jesudasan of Nuwara Eliya and got him remanded pending the investigation.
He died in remand prison.
Sometime later, the TID abandoned the investigation.
The CID believes that it was relieved of the task in order to protect the actual killers and to cover up the investigation.
That has been confirmed by the evidence gathered following the resumption of the investigation.
