Security guard breaks into Court Safe

The Galle Magistrate A. Nishantha Peiris had ordered that the security guard of the court production room at the Galle Magistrate’s Court be remanded until August 13, over the breaking into of the safe on August 3.

He is Sasika Lavan, the security guard at the courts.

He was produced in court for causing damage to state property and attempting to steal.

Based on a tip off when the Habaraduwa Police had gone to inspect the complaint around 10.45 pm on that day, a group who had been trying to cut open the safe at the Galle Court house had left behind their equipment and fled the scene.

The security guard was later arrested while he was found to be drunk, while the equipment used to break into the safe, left behind by the thieves had also been taken into police custody. Police had also recovered a mobile phone belonging to the thieves and have obtained a clear identification of the vehicle used in their getaway.

According to the Habaraduwa Acting OIC Inspector of Police Dinesh Nishantha, a court order is to be obtained to examine the telephone numbers on the mobile phone. He also noted that a great amount of information had already been received about the thieves.
