This decision was taken at a meeting of the JO party leaders headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
During this meeting several proposals and suggestions had been presented and Colombo district MP Wimal Weerawansa had pointed out that until a presidential candidate from the Joint Opposition is named, it is not suitable to express various suggestions on who the candidate would be and create disputes among the members within the JO group.
Weerawansa noted that once the Presidential election is announced and former president Mahinda Rajapaksa announces who the JO candidate would be, the whole party should work together towards that nominated candidate’s victory.
Former President Mahinda Rjapaksa had also said that prior to deciding on the JO candidate for the Presidential election, he would meet with the JO party leaders and discuss with them on who the most suitable candidate would be. Thereafter, he used all the JO members to work together to ensure his victory.
Accordingly, the JO led coalition had taken a decision to refrain from talking about the presidential candidate from the JO until former President Mahinda Rajapaksa nominates the suitable candidate.
