Ali Sabry to undertake an official visit to Japan

On an invitation extended by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Japan from 01 July 2024.

During this visit, the Foreign Minister will engage in bilateral discussions with his Japanese counterpart which will focus on making further progress on the outcome of the latter’s official visit to Sri Lanka in May 2024. Foreign Minister Sabry will also call on several other dignitaries including Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan Yoshimasa Hayashi.

The Foreign Minister will be accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Over 1,200 kilos of narcotics to be incinerated in Vanathavillu today

The local authorities are set to destroy a total of 1,208 kilograms of narcotics at the high-powered incinerator situated in Wanathavilluwa, Puttalam today (29).

This follows a directive from the Aluthkade Magistrates Court to dispose of the seized drugs, which include 614 kilograms of ice, 581 kilograms of ketamine, and 13 kilograms of heroin.

The process will commence with the transportation of the illicit substances from the Aluthkade Magistrates Court premises to the incinerator site in Puttalam.

Located on 20 perches of land in the Lactose Garden area of Vanathavilluwa, the incinerator has been installed under the supervision of the Special Task Force (STF). 

The Sri Lanka Navy undertook site preparation, while the Sri Lanka Police allocated Rs. 6.34 million towards the setup, ensuring all necessary infrastructure and security measures were in place for the operation.

Keheliya and 7 others further remanded

Former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella and 07 others have been further remanded until July 12 by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court over the import of substandard human Immunoglobulin vials.

This order was issued when the case was taken up before the Maligakanda Magistrate today (28).

Meanwhile, a suspect in the case – an officer of the Medical Supplies Division (MSD), has been released on bail.

Bus fares to be slashed by 5%

A decision has been taken to reduce bus fares by 5% with effect from July 01.

The reduction comes under the annual fare revision, and as agreed during a meeting between Transport Ministry officials and private bus operators earlier today (28).
Accordingly, the minimum fare has been reduced by Rs. 2 to Rs. 28.
