Sri Lanka’s LGBTQI community wore colorful attire and marched from the Vihara Maha Devi Park towards Kollupitiya in a procession on Sunday (4) to celebrate this year’s ‘Pride Month.’

Celebrations are being held in the ‘Pride Month’ in June to commemorate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride.

Countries around the world celebrate the diversity of LGBTQ+ communities this month.

Sunday’s march was held under the theme ‘Freedom Pride Parade’.

Social activist Chanu Nimesha spoke to the media before the march commenced and said, “We have to create a fair and just society and we will fight for that. Members of our community have no access to equality. They are being teased and ridiculed by society.”

“Psychiatrists all over the world have said that homosexuality is not a mental disease. Many people in our community commit suicide due to mental stress. We discussed these issues with the members of the Maha Sangha of the three Nikayas as well and they understood our issues,” she said.
