All bilateral creditors who have given loans to Sri Lanka should actively contribute to debt restructuring, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said.

He said this at a joint news conference held in Colombo today.

“We believe they should help restore Sri Lanka’s economy. Without waiting for others, we decided to do what we believe is right. We gave a financial guarantee to the International Monetary Fund, which will make it easier for Sri Lanka to move forward. Our hope is that it will further strengthen Sri Lanka’s position and allow all bilateral creditors to act equally.”

He further said that India has always helped for the political and economic stability of Sri Lanka.

“The President told me about the devolution of power and his opinions on the matter. I told him that it is important to fully implement the 13th Constitutional Amendment and hold the provincial council elections as soon as possible. I highlighted the importance of making a long-term effort to establish reconciliation in a way that affects all sections of the population in Sri Lanka. I also mentioned that it is necessary to look after the needs of the Tamil people of Indian origin,” he said.
