Former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who is in remand custody, has refused to attend the parliamentary session today (Feb.07) despite being given permission, the Prisons Department said.

The Fifth Session of the Ninth Parliament will be ceremoniously declared open by President Ranil Wickremesinghe this morning.

The Parliament was prorogued with effect from midnight on January 26, by way of a proclamation published in the government gazette.

Approval granted for Keheliya to attend parliament session

The Speaker has granted approval for Member of Parliament Keheliya Rambukwella to attend the opening of the 5th session of the 9th parliament today (07), as per the announcement by Parliament.

Rambukwella, who recently resigned as the Minister of Environment, is currently in remand custody in connection with the procurement of substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

Non-academic university staff to launch 2-day token strike

The non-academic staff members of state universities have decided to go on a two-day token strike over several demands including a salary hike.

Accordingly, the strike will be held tomorrow (Feb.28) and the day after (Feb.29), University Trade Union Joint Committee’s Dhammika Priyantha said.

The committee had also warned to resort to a continuous TU action if authorities fail to address their issues within a week.

Govt. donates Ifthar funds to Children of Gaza Fund

The Cabinet has approved the proposal by President Wickremesinghe to create a “Children of Gaza Fund” in aid of Gaza violence victims. 

All Ministries & Government Institutions directed to forego Ifthar celebrations & contribute to this fund. 

The Government’s donation of US $1 million will be distributed through official UN agencies to aid affected children with citizen contributions encouraged.

The Presidential Secretariat urges donations from citizens for the “Children of Gaza Fund” during the month of Ramadan to account number 7040016 at Bank of Ceylon (7010), Taprobane Branch (747) by 11th April & deposit receipt to be forwarded to 0779730396 via WhatsApp, the PMD adds.
