A’pura rape case : 2 more arrested

Two more suspects have been arrested over the incident where a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital was sexually assaulted.

According to police, the arrests were made last night (March 12) in the Nidikumbayaya area of Galnewa.

The suspects include the sister of the main suspect.

According to police, the suspect’s sister was arrested on charges of aiding him in evading capture, while the other individual was found in possession of a mobile phone allegedly stolen by the suspect.

The arrested individuals are a 37-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, police confirmed.

Meanwhile, the main suspect is set to be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today (March 13).

He was arrested yesterday during a joint search operation conducted by Galnewa Police and Anuradhapura Police Special Task Force while hiding in a forested area in Galnewa.

The suspect, a 34-year-old resident of Galnewa, is currently being held at the Anuradhapura Police Station.

Based on information uncovered during interrogation, police recovered the knife used to threaten the female doctor during the assault.

However, the doctor’s mobile phone, which was reportedly taken at the time of the assault, has not yet been recovered.
