Bandula asks SLTB chairman to resign

Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardena has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), Kingsley Ranawaka.

In a letter addressed to the SLTB chairman, the minister states that the ‘Park and Ride – City Bus Service’, which was initiated under a policy decision of the government, has been suddenly suspended without informing him, based on a decision reached by the Director Board of the Sri Lanka Transport Board.

Therefore, the Minister, under the powers vested in him by Sri Lanka Transport Board Act, No. 27 of 2005, has instructed Mr. Ranawaka to resign from the posts of SLTB chairman and Director Board member with immediate effect.

Appeals Court upholds prison sentence for ex-Dy. Minister in bribery case

The Court of Appeal has upheld a prison sentence given to former Deputy Minister Shantha Premaratne who was found guilty of the charges of obtaining a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a woman after promising employment.

This order was issued when an appeal filed by the accused former Deputy Minister, seeking his acquittal from the case, was taken up before a two-member Appeals Court judge bench comprising Justices Sampath Abeykoon and P. Kumaran Rathnam today (Nov. 05).

The former Deputy Minister was sentenced to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty over the relevant charges by the Colombo High Court.

Millions set to vote at tight US elections

The 2024 Presidential Election in the United States is held today (Nov. 05) with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris vying to become the next president.
Millions of people will soon head to the polls, which open in some states at 05:00 ET (10:00 GMT).

Harris, who became the Democratic Party candidate after President Joe Biden exited the race, has advocated for abortion rights and pledged to lower food and housing costs for working families.

Republican candidate Trump, who survived two assassination attempts this year, has vowed to seal the border and has proposed tax cuts worth trillions.

Trump ended his campaign with a speech in Michigan – while Harris wrapped up her campaign in another swing state, Pennsylvania.

More than 82 million people have already voted in what polls suggest is an historically close election.

Man arrested over circulating fake banknote with President’s image

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has arrested an individual for allegedly circulating a doctored image of a Rs. 5,000 currency note featuring the image of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on it.

Police said that the 38-year-old suspect was arrested yesterday (Nov. 04). 

According to the police, he is a resident of Korathota in Athurugiriya and works as a salesperson.
