Betting & gambling taxes to be increased

The draft bill to increase betting and gambling taxes has been gazetted.

According to the gazette issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of Finance, the US$ 50 fee charged from a Sri Lankan to enter a gambling centre has been increased to US$ 100.

Meanwhile, each individual operating a betting centre must register the establishment with the Inland Revenue Department within one month from the date of commencement.

It has also been proposed to revise the amount of betting and gambling tax to be paid annually. The annual tax charged from betting centres has been increased to 5 million rupees starting from April 1.

In case of using live television broadcasting facilities, the amount of tax that is being charged has been increased to one million rupees from Rs. 600,000.
