Brian Thomas owes Rs.1,440 million to Dinesh Schaffter

The Attorney General filed charges against veteran cricket commentator Brian Thomas before Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday (5) regarding an allegation of giving dud cheques amounting to over Rs.1,440 million to deceased Janashakthi PLC Group Director Dinesh Schaffter for purchasing ready-made garments.

The Attorney General filed this case following a complaint made by the deceased businessman who resided at No. 39, Flower Road in Colombo 7 and based on an investigation by the Financial Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Ten charges were filed under the Debt Recovery Act in seven cases regarding the issuance of 20 dud cheques and Mr. Thomas pleaded not guilty.

These cases were filed in relation to transactions that took place in 2017.

The suspect on 20 occasions had issued these cheques after receiving ready-made garments for export from a private textile shop.

After the suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges, the case was postponed for November 2 for further hearing.
