Bulk of imported Basmati rice failed quality standards!

Tests conducted by the Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI) in Batalagoda have revealed that 162 out of 365 samples of Basmati rice imported to Sri Lanka in the last 03 years since 2021, are of substandard quality.

Accordingly, 203 samples had met import standards.

From the year 2021, Basmati rice has been imported to Sri Lanka from various countries including India and Pakistan.

Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries – Mahinda Amaraweera, had recently informed the RRDI to provide a quality report on the samples of Basmati rice imported to Sri Lanka from 2021 to date.

Accordingly, 109 samples of Basmati rice imported from India during this time were given to the RRDI. Of these, 68 samples were declared acceptable while 41 were rejected.

Similarly, 214 samples of Basmati rice from Pakistan were also tested with 121 samples deemed acceptable and 93 failing to meet quality standards.

Also, 42 rice samples from other countries were provided to the RRDI, of which only 14 samples were found to be of suitable quality.

Sri Lanka Railways says the Colombo Fort – Kankesanthurai Express train will resume daily operations within this month.

It is operating only on weekends at the present.

SLR says that the daily operations will now commence following capacity improvements.

Doctors say rest is crucial for children with flu symptoms

Pediatricians have warned that children showing symptoms of influenza may suffer heart damage if they engage in sports or strenuous physical activity.

Dr. Deepal Perera, Consultant Pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, has advised parents to keep children with such symptoms at home and avoid sending them to school or preschool.

He has also noted that there are rising cases of Dengue, Chikungunya and Diarrhea among children as well.

KKS police station receives anonymous threat call

The Kankesanthurai Police Station has reportedly received an anonymous phone call alleging that around 10 police stations in the Northern Province would come under attack.

The call was received between 1:15 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. on 11 June, police said.

Police investigations have been launched in connection with the anonymous threat.

Meanwhile, the Police Media Division stated that enhanced security measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of police stations across the Northern Province.
