The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken steps to sue All Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association Chairman R. M. Sarath Rathnayake for selling overpriced eggs.
The chairman who owns an egg selling shop in Kobeigane, Kurunegala has sold a white egg for Rs.45.
According to the gazette notification issued by the CAA, the maximum retail price of a white egg is Rs.44 and the maximum retail price of a red egg is Rs.46.
The CAA officials have deployed an agent and conducted this raid to nab this errant egg vendor.
The CAA agent has purchased 20 eggs from the shop and he has been charged Rs.45 per one egg.
The CAA officials said that a case will be filed against Mr. Sarath Rathnayake in the Nikaweratiya Magistrate’s Court on the 14th for selling eggs exceeding the fixed price.
