Cabinet approval to set up oil refinery Hambantota

The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to call expressions of interest (EOI) to establish an export-oriented oil refinery and related product processing centre in Hambantota.

Speaking at the weekly cabinet briefing today (10) morning, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena pointed out that various parties including foreign investors are showing interest in utilizing this investment opportunity.

Accordingly, Cabinet approval has been granted for the proposal presented by Minister of Power and Energy – Kanchana Wijesekera to issue notices calling EOIs in order to select a suitable investor for the establishment of the refinery and to receive detailed proposals from investors who meet the basic requirements.

Heavy showers forecast today

Showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts today (June 28), the Department of Meteorology stated.

Fairly heavy falls above 50mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

A few showers may occur in the Jaffna, Mannar, Anuradhapura and Matale districts.

Showers or thundershowers may have also been predicted in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Meanwhile, fairly strong winds of about 30-40kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

O/L results expected in end of July

Commissioner General of Examinations A.K.S. Indika Kumari Liyanage says the G.C.E. Ordinary Level 2024 (2025) exam results will be released around the third week of July.

This clarification comes after false social media reports claiming the results would be out earlier, which the Department of Examinations has denied.

2 ex-heads of govt. institutions, arrested

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested two former Chairmen on corruption charges.

Former Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation – Upali Liyanage and former SriLankan Airlines Chairman – Nishantha Wickremesinghe have been arrested in this manner.

However, Liyanage, who was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayathunga, was released on three sureties amounting to Rs. 5 million.
