Cabinet approves to extend agreement with Malaysia

The Cabinet has decided to extend the validity period of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Malaysia.

The Cabinet has thus approved the extension of the validity period of the MoU signed with the Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute.

The MoU was signed in 2016 for a period of five years between Sri Lanka and Malaysia to formalise and continue the scientific cooperation in the field of agriculture between the two countries.

The validity period of the MoU has ended and both parties have agreed to extend the agreement for another five years.

Dondra double homicide : another suspect arrested

Another suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two individuals near the southern gate of the ‘Sri Vishnu Devalaya’ in Dondra.

The crime occurred on March 21, 2025.

According to police, the arrested individual is accused of aiding and abetting the murder by transporting the gunmen involved in the deadly attack.

The suspect, a 33-year-old resident of Thalalla South in Gandara was taken into custody yesterday evening (April 24).

Further investigations are underway.

04 die during ‘Siri Dalada Wandanawa’

Director of the Kandy National Hospital – Dr. Iresha Fernando stated that 04 people who visited Kandy for the ‘Siri Dalada Wandanawa’ and official duties have died.

The deceased are aged 69, 70, 74 and 80.

According to post-mortem examinations, one of them had died of a heart attack.

The forensic medical officer has taken steps to forward the body parts to the forensic pathologist, giving an open verdict regarding the deaths of the other 03.

Meanwhile, around 300 people were admitted to the Kandy National Hospital over the past week, with many suffering from dehydration and fainting.

There are 09 health centers operating in the vicinity of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, and nearly 3,000 people have received treatment from them in the past few days.

Kandy District Regional Health Services Director – Senaka Thalagala said that 07 Suwaseriya ambulances have been deployed to hospitalise those falling ill during the  ‘Siri Dalada Wandanawa’.

Heavy showers expected today

The Department of Meteorology says that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (the zone where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge) is affecting the island’s weather.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, North-western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts today (April 25).

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere on the island after 1.00 p.m.

Fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces and in Puttalam, Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Ampara district during the morning.
