Cabinet slams CBSL officials over salary hike

Officials of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) have been severely criticized after being summoned to the Cabinet meeting yesterday (March 04), reports say.

CBSL governor – Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe was among the officials summoned to the Cabinet meeting over the process and rationale behind the recent salary hike given to its employees.

Recent media reports revealed that the CBSL had increased the salaries of its employees by 70% and the move was heavily criticized by both government and opposition parliamentarians.

Although the CBSL governor had defended the move, the Cabinet had unanimously stated that the move was wrong and unethical at this juncture.

Following the severe criticism of the Cabinet, the President has directed to take a decision in this regard at the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) meeting which is to be held today (March 05).
