CC approves 2 appointments of the JSC

The Constitutional Council met yesterday 07.02.2023 which was presided by Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, the Speaker and the Chairman of the Constitutional Council.

Prime Minister – Dinesh Gunawardena, Leader of the Opposition – Sajith Premadasa, Minister – Nimal Siripala de Silva and other Members of the Council who are not Members of Parliament Dr. Prathap Ramanujam, Dr. Dilkushi Anula Wijesundere and Dr. Dinesha Samararatne were present at the Council meeting held.

MPs Sagara Kariyawasam and Kabir Hashim had informed them of their inability to attend this meeting due to unavoidable circumstances.

The Constitutional Council unanimously approved the recommendations of the President to re-appoint Supreme Court judges – Buwaneka Aluvihare and to appoint E. A. G. R. Amarasekara as Members of the Judicial Service Commission.

The Constitutional Council further decided to publish the advertisement calling for applications for the appointment of Members to the Commissions specified in Schedule to Article 41B of the Constitution, on newspapers of this weekend to give a wider publicity and accordingly, the previously published advertisement will be re-published on the newspapers of Sunday. Draft format of the application would be published in the Official Parliament.

CEB yet to submit proposals for Electricity tariff revision

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) says it expects the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to submit proposals related to the second electricity tariff revision of the year within the coming week.

PUCSL Director of Communications – Jayanath Herath has said that if there is to be a revision of electricity tariffs in June or July, the relevant proposals should be submitted to the Commission in May.

Once the proposals are received, the PUCSL is scheduled to study them and announce its decision within three to six weeks. During this period, public opinions will also be called regarding the proposed revisions.

However, the CEB is yet to submit the necessary proposals to the PUCSL.

Speaking during a TV programme last week, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had stated that a June electricity tariff revision will see a hike.

Heavy rains over 50 mm expected in some areas

The Department of Meteorology says showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern and Eastern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district after 1.00 p.m today (May 08).

Fairly heavy rains above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere on the island during the afternoon or night.

Meanwhile, showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam district in the morning too.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning

World Bank Group President meets with President AKD (Pics)

President of the World Bank Group Ajay Banga met with President Anura Kumara Disanayake this afternoon (07) at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

This visit marks a milestone, as it is the first time in nearly two decades that a World Bank Group President has visited Sri Lanka.

During the meeting, discussions centred on strengthening collaboration to support Sri Lanka’s future development agenda. Priority areas identified included digitalisation, tourism, agriculture and infrastructure development, with particular emphasis on identifying short-term rewards, including advancing development in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

The Sri Lankan government’s efforts to establish a robust legal framework conducive to attracting new investments and recent policy initiatives were also discussed during the meeting.

Attendees at the meeting included Trevor Kincaid, Special Advisor – World Bank Group, David Sislen, Country Division Director – Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka – World Bank Group, Imad Fakhoury, Regional Director – South Asia International Finance Corporation and Gevorg Sargsyan, Country Manager – Maldives & Sri Lanka¸ World Bank Group.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Harshana Suriyapperuma and Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponsu, along with several other dignitaries, also attended the occasion.
