“Census of Population and Housing 2024” report presented to the President

The report of the “Census of Population and Housing 2024,” conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics, was officially handed over to President Anura Kumara Disanayake this morning (07) at the Presidential Secretariat.

This preliminary report has been prepared based on island wide data collected between October and December 2024.

The report provides details on Sri Lanka’s population, its growth and the distribution of the population across districts.

The information gathered through the census is vital not only for the government but also for other institutions in formulating policies and development plans essential for the country’s progress. Significantly, for the first time in the history of census-collecting in Sri Lanka, data collection was carried out using tablet computers and user-friendly mobile devices.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning, Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Mahinda Siriwardana, Director General of the Department of Census and Statistics D.D.G.A. Senevirathne and several other officials.

10-hr. water cut tomorrow in Gampaha District

A 10-hour water cut will be imposed in several areas in the Gampaha District tomorrow (June 11), the National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB) has announced.

Accordingly, the water supply to the Peliyagoda, Wattala, Ja-Ela and the Katunayake-Seeduwa Urban Council areas and Kelaniya, Biyagama, Mahara, Dompe, Katana, Minuwangoda and Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha areas will be suspended from 08:30am – 06:30pm tomorrow, the NWSDB said.

The NWSDB noted that the water cut is being imposed to facilitate the connection of the solar grid at the Biyagama Water Treatment Plant to the main grid and also to carry out essential maintenance activities.

First Dy. Managing Director of IMF to visit Sri Lanka

Dr. Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from June 15 -16, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka states.

The CBSL adds : This visit is significant, as it marks the first time since 2005 that a serving FDMD of the IMF visits Sri Lanka. During this visit, Dr. Gopinath will be the guest of honour at the conference on “Sri Lanka’s Road to Recovery: Debt and Governance”, jointly co-hosted by the Ministry of Finance, Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the IMF, scheduled to be held on 16 June 2025. At the mid-point of the IMF-supported reform programme, the conference aims to reflect upon the lessons learnt from Sri Lanka’s experience in restoring macroeconomic stability, implementing debt restructuring and governance reforms, and to focus on the challenges ahead. Additionally, FDMD is expected to hold bilateral discussions with the Sri Lankan authorities and several key stakeholders on the IMF’s engagement with Sri Lanka.

Additional Secretary (Public Health Services) of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media – Consultant Dr. Lakshmi Somathunga states that 19,185 Poson ‘Dansal’ have been registered across the country for the 2025 Poson festival.

The breakdown includes :

Anuradhapura – 2,301, Kurunegala – 2,114, Gampaha – 1,792, Kandy – 1,264, Galle – 1,186, Matara – 1,021, Ratnapura – 1,097, Colombo – 944, Kalutara – 977, Badulla – 968, Matale – 812, Monaragala – 716, Puttalam – 731, Polonnaruwa – 650, Ampara – 584, Hambantota – 533, Trincomalee – 152, Nuwara Eliya – 352, Batticaloa – 9, Jaffna – 3, Kilinochchi – 3, Mullaitivu – 17, Vavuniya – 21, Mannar – 2, Kalmunai – 14, Kegalle – 922

A special circular titled “Detailed Guidelines for Organizing a Safe and Hygienic Dansala,” dated 2025.05.06, has been issued by the Director General of Health Services.

The guidelines cover registration with health authorities, inspections by public health inspectors, hygiene standards for food handlers and preparers, quality of raw ingredients, food preparation, waste disposal, and overall food safety awareness and enforcement.
