Census on beggars commenced

The Parliamentary Ways and Means Committee has informed the Department of Social Services to conduct a census on beggars in urban areas and submit a report.

It was reported that the Department of Social Services has made plans to conduct this census in collaboration with the Rural Development Training and Research Institute.

The Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment said that field officers such as Counseling Officers, Development Officers and Social Service Officers have been deployed to conduct the census.

The census commenced on the 5th and will be conducted on the 6th, 7th and 8th.

Sri Lanka Police have also agreed to contribute for this census while the department plans to use new software to collect and store data.

Supplementary Medical Professionals launch strike

Joint Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) has launched an island wide strike in hospitals today (05) due to the Ministry of Health not providing solutions to tissues they have raised.

General Secretary of the JCPSM – Chanaka Dharmawickrama, had previously stated that the strike will begin at 8.00 am today,

However, it has been noted that specific institutions, including the Cancer Hospital, Maternity and Children’s Hospitals, Kidney Hospitals, and the Central Blood Bank (CBB), will not be affected by the strike.

Dharmawickrama, also stated that five professional bodies including medical laboratory services, pharmacy sectors, and others, will join the strike today.

The JCPSM has emphasised that it will not call off the strike unless a formal discussion is held and tangible steps are taken to address their concerns.

Rains expected in some areas today

Several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, the Department of Meteorology said.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva and Eastern provinces and in Polonnaruwa district during the afternoon or night today (June 05).

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
