Chairman on the way to assume duties shot at in Padukka

Darshan Samarawickrama, who was on his way to assume duties as the Chairman of the Battaramulla branch of the Co-Operative Insurance Company, was shot at this morning at Gemunu Mawatha, Walpita in Padukka.

The Meegoda Police said the victim who suffered gunshot wounds was admitted to the Homagama Base Hospital.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he was shot at by two men who arrived on a motorbike when the victim was trying to take his car to the Gemunu Mawatha from his home.

A spokesperson of the Homagama Base Hospital said that his hand was injured in the shooting and his condition was not critical.

The scene of crime officers (SOCOs) of the Nugegoda Police and the officials of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Meegoda Police are conducting further investigations.

Special Days designated for Postal Voting begin today

The two special days designated for postal voting for the 2024 General Election begin today.

Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake says that state sector employees who were unable to cast their postal votes on the 30th of October and 1st and 4th of November, may do so today and tomorrow.

Arrangements have been made for them to cast their votes at the District Secretariat in the district to which their workplaces belong.

SLAF peacekeeping missions contribute $130 million to Treasury

A new contingent from the Sri Lanka Air Force, comprising 20 officers and 88 airmen, will depart for the Central African Republic in early December for peacekeeping duties under the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission (MINUSCA). 

Since 2014, the SLAF’s involvement in peacekeeping missions has contributed approximately 130 million USD to the national Treasury.

The Passing Out Parade for this 10th contingent was held at SLAF Base Katunayake, with Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa taking the salute. 

He noted the praise from UN Headquarters for the Sri Lankan forces’ professionalism and dedication, underscoring the mission’s role in boosting Sri Lanka’s international standing and economic gains.

Landslide warnings for several areas

The National Building and Research Organisation (NBRO) has extended the early landslide warnings issued to multiple areas in eight districts, as heavy rainfall continues in parts of the island.

The NBRO says that the warnings will be in effect until 4.00 pm tomorrow (Nov. 07).

Accordingly, a Level 1 (Amber) warning has been issued for several Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) and surrounding areas in the Badulla, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara and Ratnapura districts as follows:

Badulla – Welimada, Haldummulla DSDs and surrounding areas
Galle – Elpitiya DSD and surrounding areas
Kalutara – Bulathsinhala DSD and surrounding areas
Kandy – Udapalatha and Yatinuwara DSDs and surrounding areas
Kegalle – Rambukkana and Mawanella DSDs and surrounding areas
Kurunegala – Polgahawela DSD and surrounding areas
Matara – Pasgoda, Akuressa and Kotapola DSDs and surrounding areas
Ratnapura – Godakawela, Imbulpe, Nivithigala, Openayake, Elapatha, Balangoda, Kalawana, Ayagama, Pelmadulla, Kiriella and Kahawatta DSDs and surrounding areas

Meanwhile, a Level 2 (Yellow) warning was issued for the following areas:

Kegalle – Deraniyagala, Ruwanwella, Dehiowita, Yatiyanthota, Kegalle, Galigamuwa, Bulathkohupitiya, Warakapola and Aranayake DSDs and surrounding areas

Ratnapura – Ratnapura, Kuruwita and Eheliyagoda DSDs and surrounding areas
