CID begins probe on hidden hand behind self-styled Bodhisatva

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun an investigation to determine if Mahinda Kodithuwakku, who calls himself the “Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva,” had been used by any non-governmental organisation or fundamentalist group to attack Buddhism.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General (SDSG) Dileepa Peiris informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court about the probe after it was revealed that the suspect was suffering from depression. The SDSG told the court that the suspect’s medical records indicated that he required psychiatric treatment.

Mr. Peiris added that investigators would also look at why someone like the suspect had used social media for his activities.

Kalinga Indatissa, PC, who appeared for the suspect, requested that the court release his client on bail, as he had already pledged not to continue with his actions.

The magistrate granted bail and ordered that the suspect be directed to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.

The case was taken up before Chief Magistrate Thilana Gamage.
