The Attorney General’s Department informed the Supreme Court yesterday (24) that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act and the Penal Code regarding the controversial statement made by Pastor Jerome Fernando in connection with different religions.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Priyantha Nawana said this announcement when a fundamental rights petition filed by Elle Gunawansa Thera and others was taken up before the Supreme Court Bench consisting of Preethi Padman Surasena and Arjuna Obeysekera yesterday, seeking an order to arrest Pastor Jerome Fernando.

The ASG said that the CID had received a number of complaints regarding this matter and the CID Director had reported the facts to the Fort Magistrate’s Court and said that an investigation had already been launched.
