The National Police Commission (NPC) has stated that the authority granted to the Acting Inspector General (IGP) to transfer police OICs has been removed.

NPC also states that the decision was taken because the Acting IGP has violated the powers of the Police Commission and various provisions of the transfer policy.

It has now been revealed that the Bingiriya Police OIC was transferred on March 25th without informing the NPC and the Election Commission.

This incident has caused a great deal of controversy in the country and therefore the powers granted to the Acting IGP have been removed, according to the NPC.

Meanwhile, the NPC stated that the transfer of the Bingiriya Police OIC has been immediately cancelled.

When an urgent and special need arises to remove an OIC, the Acting IGP was empowered to remove him, appoint a suitable officer and inform the Chairman of the Police Commission about it.

However, the NPC says that the Acting IGP has violated the powers and transfer policy of the National Police Commission by not following the said procedure.

The NPC further states that it unanimously decided to revoke the general decision as it could create a very problematic situation by allowing the Acting IGP to continue to act in accordance with the general decision.
