Colombo-KKS train operations to recommence in July

Train operations along the Northern Line between Colombo and Kankesanturai are expected to recommence in July.

Train operations along the Northern Railway line have been restricted to Anuradhapura since January due to the modernisation project of the railway line between Maho junction and Omanthai.

At present, the railway track between Anuradhapura and Vavuniya is being modernised leading to the restrictions.

The renovation project is being carried out under Indian assistance at a cost of USD 91 million.

Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena meanwhile has said, the upgrade of the track between Anuradhapura and Omanthai is being carried out expeditiously.

He said once completed, trains will be able to run at an average speed of 100m/h along the Northern Line.

Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena added the completion of the renovation work along the Northern Railway line will result in the journey time between Kankesanturai and Colombo reducing by around one hour and 30 minutes.

According to a senior spokesman of Sri Lanka Railways, renovations of the railway track between Anuradhapura and Vavuniya are expected to be completed in July.

Following the completion of the renovations, train operations between Colombo and Kankesanturai are scheduled to recommence on the 15th of July.

Private security officers arrested over theft at Swiss Ambassador’s residence

Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror) – The Kollupitiya Police have arrested three individuals, including the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of a private security firm and another security officer, in connection with a theft at the official residence of the Swiss Ambassador in Colombo, where gold jewellery, including a diamond-studded ring and luxury wristwatches worth approximately Rs. 4.5 million were stolen from a safe.

According to police, the investigation was launched following a complaint lodged by the Swiss Ambassador, who had left for Switzerland on April 12 and returned on April 27.

Investigations revealed that after the Ambassador’s departure, the suspects gained access to her safe using a key that had been illegally duplicated. The jewellery and watches were subsequently stolen.

Following interrogations, police also arrested a locksmith who had allegedly made the duplicate key used in the theft.

Police have recovered several rings, believed to be part of the stolen items, from the one of the suspect security officers in Weligama.

At the time of the theft, two female domestic workers and a cook were present at the residence. They were questioned and later released after being cleared of any involvement.

The three suspects were produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court and have been remanded until May 22.

CMC Mayor to be elected on June 02

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will be elected on June 02, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Local Government.

The vote comes as no single party secured a clear majority at the recently concluded LG polls.

The candidate who secures over 50% in the vote – whether from the government or opposition, will be appointed as the new Mayor.At the LG polls, the National People’s Power (NPP) won the most number of seats – 48 out of 119, but fell short of the 60 needed to claim a majority and form a council on its own. 

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) came second with 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) secured 13. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) won five and four seats respectively.

Long-distance buses to undergo special inspections

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed all Officers-in-Charge (OIC) and senior police officers to conduct special inspections on long-distance passenger buses.

The Police Media Division stated that the directive comes in response to the increasing number of road accidents involving long-distance buses.

These inspections will mainly be conducted at night, focusing on drunk driving, drug use, and reckless driving.

The Acting IGP has issued firm instructions for special police teams to be deployed at strategic locations across various police divisions to monitor and inspect buses and other vehicles operating during night hours.

Additionally, he has directed officers attached to Police Motorcycle Patrol Units to identify and take legal action against buses driven recklessly.
