Committee appointed to remove unauthorised structures near Sigiriya

Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister – Hiniduma Sunil Senevi revealed that 124 unauthorised structures have been erected within the limits of 200 to 400 yards from the Sigiriya rock.

Speaking at a media briefing he has added that steps have been taken to remove all the anauthorised structures which are against the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) standards.

He added an inter-institutional committee has been appointed with 15 institutions such as the Department of Archeology, the Central Cultural Fund, the Urban Development Authority (UDA), Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabah and Urban Council, to remove the structures.

The minister has also said that the rising number of unauthorized constructions around Sigiriya could jeopardize its UNESCO status.

Meanwhile, Director General of the Department of Archaeology, Professor D. Thusitha Mendis has also said that although Sigiriya is not currently at risk of being removed from the World Heritage List, these unauthorized structures pose a potential threat to its status in the future.

Hotline to report dengue breeding sites in CMC limits

A hotline has been introduced to report mosquito breeding sites within the limits of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

Accordingly, the public are able to report such incidents to 011 2696594.

The CMC has announced that extensive dengue control programs covering all areas within the municipality limits were launched yesterday (July 03) with 60 teams deployed.

Last year, 2,576 dengue cases were reported within the CMC area.

Meanwhile, today marks the fifth day of the National Dengue Prevention Week.

According to the Ministry of Health, 6,370 mosquito breeding sites were identified during inspections carried out yesterday.

‘Army Upul’ shot dead in Ragama

A man was shot dead at around 10.30 pm last night (July 03) in Batuwatte, Ragama, police said.

He was gunned down by 02 unidentified suspects in a three-wheeler, who had fled soon afterwards, police said.

Police believe a pistol was used in the attack.

The deceased, has been identified as ‘Army Upul’ – a 45-year-old former soldier and reportedly an accomplice of underworld figure ‘Ganemulle Sanjeewa’.

Ragama Police have launched further investigations.

03 deported fraud suspects, arrested at BIA

03 suspects who had fled to India after committing large-scale financial fraud in Sri Lanka, have been deported back to the island yesterday (July 03).

They were arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) upon their arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.
