Committee to probe Badulla vehicle parade accident

A three-member committee has been appointed based on the advice of the Education Secretary of the Uva Province to investigate the incident in which an SUV toppled over during a vehicle parade.

Education Secretary of the Uva Province Nandasena Herath said the committee comprises an official of the Uva Province Education office and two officials attached to the Uva Province Education Directors office.

Herath said he expects the security forces to assist in putting a stop to such programs organized in line with the annual cricket encounters of other schools in the province.

Badulla Magistrate Nojith De Silva conducted the magisterial inquiry of the Badulla new stadium on Sunday (02) morning, where the accident occurred. 

Two students of Badulla Dharmadutha College were killed and six others were injured when an SUV overturned during a vehicle parade organized in line with the annual cricket match between Badulla Dharmadutha College and Uva College on Saturday (01).

The six students injured in the accident are receiving treatment at the Badulla General Hospital.

Hospital sources said two of them are in serious condition.

The bodies of the two deceased students were handed over to their relatives on Sunday (02).

180 passports found dumped in a drain!

A bag with 180 passports has been found in a drain in the Maharagama area.

According to reports, the passports had been obtained by a foreign employment agency operating in the Maharagama area, promising foreign employment.

It is reported that the owner of the agency had fled the area, after duping a number of people and swindling nearly Rs. 260 million.

VFS issues statement on Sri Lanka E-visa

VFS Global has issued a statement in response to clarify certain concerns which have been raised.

In the statement the company says the Department of Immigration & Emigration (DI&E) signed a tripartite contract with GBS Technology Services & IVS Global FZCO being the prime contractor and VFS Global being the technology partner for the Sri Lanka government’s new E-Visa solution. www.srilankaevisa.lk.

The company notes it manages non-judgmental and administrative tasks related to the application process only and the decision to grant or reject the visa is at the sole discretion of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
