Compensation for those killed in train & SLTB bus accidents, upped

The compensation given to those who die in accidents while traveling in trains and on SLTB buses, has been increased to Rs. 500,000.

It is reported that the decision has been taken over a cabinet paper submitted by the Transport Minister, in the backdrop of two such recent incidents – the demise of a young man who fell off a train on Sep. 11 and the 05 deaths that occurred on Oct. 05 after a tree collapsed on top of a bus.

Previously, the compensation stood at Rs. 150,000.

2 free marks to be given for O/L Science MCQ paper

Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara has said that it has been decided to award one mark each for questions No. 9 and 39 of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination 2023 (2024), Science Paper 1 following complaints received.

He was addressing the media at the Examinations Department on Wednesday.

The analysing panel has decided to offer two marks for two questions of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper of Science Paper 1 of the G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination, which concluded yesterday.

He said that Science question paper 1 has led to controversy with the recent spread on social media that the science paper contains questions outside essential teachings.

Commenting on this he added that during the Covid-19 pandemic period it was decided to remove some parts from teaching at schools as a move to well-utilise the school time under the method called “Recovery Plan for Learning Loss 2022”.

The Recovery Plan for Learning Loss 2022 was scheduled to be implemented until 2023. However this examination is related to last year (2023) even though it was held in 2024. Then it was decided to apply the recommendations of the Recovery Plan for Learning Loss 2022, and therefore one mark each is offered for two MCQ questions.

15 bikers fined for dangerous riding on Galle Road

Fifteen bikers involved in dangerous riding for money bets on the Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, Colombo have been fined Rs. 427,500 by the Colombo Traffic Court yesterday (May 13).

The court also suspended their driving licenses for six months.

The Bambalapitiya Police had arrested these motorcyclists early morning on May 05 and released them on police bail after processing at the police station. The suspects, aged between 20 and 28, are residents of Colombo and Colombo suburbs.

Following their arrest, the motorcycles were inspected for any defects by a vehicle inspector and the suspects were produced before the Colombo Traffic Court.
The Bambalapitiya Police are conducting further investigations.

Retired DIG, NWP politician to be quizzed

Police are planning to question a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and another powerful politician in the North Western Province in connection with the investigation into the murder of Susith Jayawansha in Kuliyapitiya.

Jayawansha who went to his girlfriend’s house in Wassaulla, Kuliyapitiya, on April 22, on a request by his girlfriend’s father, had been later beaten to death and his body had been found in Madampe Panirendawa forest reserve.

Police have also received information that the former DIG retired after working in the North Western Province and his wife is a relative of the main suspect in this murder.

A senior Police officer involved in the investigation said that it was the retired DIG who misled the Police by saying that the main suspect, Singithi, and his wife would be handed over to the Police and later convinced them to surrender to Court.

Investigations have also revealed that Singithi, the main suspect in this murder, is in close association with several powerful politicians in the North Western Province.

Police have received information that he has taken legal advice from two North Western Province politicians who are also lawyers.

During an investigation of the telephone network, it has also been clearly revealed that Singithi had made several telephone calls to these politicians on those days.

Police had recorded a statement from Athula Wijesinghe, a former Chief Minister of the North Western Province, after it was found that Singithi had placed calls to him.

So far eight people have been arrested in connection with this murder.

Among them are the main suspect Singithi, his wife and his parents.

In addition, Singithi’s brother-in-law and the two carpenters who were brought by Singithi from Welimada to assist him with this murder too are under custody.
