The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Matale has taken steps to suspend a police constable for sexually assaulting a teenaged girl who visited the police station to complain about being sexually abused.

The suspended police constable is attached to the Mahawela Police.

He has committed the crime on August 27 last year while working at the Kandenuwara Police in Matale.

The victim who had been sexually assaulted by the constable had visited the police station to lodge a complaint about being sexually abused.

Following the complaint, the officers of the Kandenuwara Police have decided to take the girl to the scene of crime and conduct an on-site inspection.

Though a female officer was supposed to accompany her to the scene of the crime, she was accompanied by a sub-inspector and the constable.

She was taken to Galgamuwa where the incident happened along with her grandfather in a three-wheeler.

Subsequently, the girl has complained to the Meegalewa Police that the police constable molested her by touching her thighs and other parts of her body during the journey.

The Meegalewa Police have taken steps to forward this complaint to the Matale Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women.

Accordingly, Bureau officers have discovered that the girl was molested by the police constable in the three-wheeler.

Steps have been taken to file a case against him in the Matale High Court.

The police constable appeared in court yesterday (23) and was released on two sureties of Rs.500,000 each and the case is to be taken up again on March 31.
