Convict in schoolgirl Vidya’s murder dies in hospital

Poobalasingham Tavakumar, who was imprisoned at the Pallekelle Prison after being sentenced to death for the murder of schoolgirl Vidya Sivaloganathan in Jaffna, died on Sunday after being admitted to the Kandy National Hospital with an emergency health condition.

The Police said that the deceased was 39 years old and had filed an appeal against the death sentence.

He was sent to Pallekele Prison after the death sentence and was admitted to the prison hospital and the Kandy National Hospital frequently due to illness.

His body has been kept at the Kandy National Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

In connection with the murder of Vidya, a three-judge bench of the Jaffna High Court sentenced the seven accused to death.

Vidya was murdered on May 13, 2015, in Jaffna and seven people arrested in connection with her murder were sentenced to death in 2017.

CMC mayor assumes duties

Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) officially assumed duties as Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Mayor today (June 18).

The most talked-about candidate in the 2025 Local Government Election, Balthazaar was elected the 26th Mayor of the CMC while receiving 61 votes following a secret ballot on Monday (June 16).

She becomes the second female Mayor of CMC, following Rosy Senanayaka.
