A work to rule campaign by three Customs trade unions has been temporarily called off, President of the Customs Officers Union, J.G.A Sanjeewa said.
The decision was taken following a meeting held with the president’s secretary and an Additional Secretary of the Finance Ministry.
Mr Sanjeewa claimed that during the meeting that they verbally acknowledged their demands were correct and assured they would be fulfilled.
The trade unionists are yet to discuss on a date to resume their trade union action if the authorities fail to fulfil their demands.
“We will wait for some days to see if the authorities fulfil our demands. We are expecting that the official letter would be sent to us tomorrow, that our demands would be fulfilled”, he said.
Meanwhile, it is revealed that the Customs’ work to rule campaign has led to a loss of nearly Rs. 03 billion.
Although 1500 – 2000 containers are cleared on a daily basis, only 400 – 500 containers were cleared yesterday with the majority of them being essential food items and medicine.
