Damitha Abeyratne & husband granted bail

Actress Damitha Abeyratne and her husband were granted bail on the orders of the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (April 24).

Accordingly, the couple was released on a surety of Rs. 5 million each.

The actress and her spouse were arrested on April 04.

The Computer Crimes Division of the CID initiated an investigation into the alleged defrauding of Rs. 3 million by the couple on the promise of employment in South Korea. Subsequently, the CID informed the court that Abeyratne and her husband would be named as suspects of the relevant case.

Man who held 2 children hostage, remanded

A man who was arrested over holding two children hostage yesterday (March 05), has been remanded until May 17, reports say.

The children were rescued by the STF after a nine-hour operation.

The suspect had come with a hand grenade to kill his wife who was living at the Government Servants Housing Complex in Jalthara last evening and took the children hostage.

The two children had been admitted to the Homagama Hospital as the suspect had injected them with something.

22 arrested after protest in Anuradhapura

Around 22 persons, including 11 females, have been arrested following a tense situation at a protest in Anuradhapura.

The tense situation was reported after a group of unemployed graduates surrounded the North Central Provincial Council building in protest, seeking solutions to their demands.

Several individuals were reported to be seriously injured in the incident when the Police attempted to diffuse the situation.

The protesters are reported to have surrounded the NCPC building, blocking all exits, with the staff and the NCPC governor – Mahipala Herath inside.
