The Constitutional Council tasked with deciding on the 6-month extension of tenure of Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam, as recommended by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, further postponed their decision making yesterday (10 June).

The Constitutional Council will next meet on 18 June on the same matter.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa participated at yesterday’s meeting via Zoom. Reports from the parliament state that the decision was postponed as the Constitutional Council wanted him to be present in person to discuss matters further.

The Attorney General’s tenure ends at the end of this month.

President’s Counsel Sanjaya Rajaratnam was appointed as the 48th Attorney General of Sri Lanka by the President in 2021.
