The new Inspector General of Police (IGP) will be appointed next week, it was reported.
The service period of IGP C.D. Wickramaratne is scheduled to end on June 26.
IGP Wickramaratne was scheduled to retire on March 26, but the government gave him a three-month service extension.
The names of Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, Nilantha Jayawardene, Lalith Pathinayake, Priyantha Weerasuriya and Ajith Rohana have been suggested for the post of the next IGP but a final decision has not been taken so far.
Meanwhile, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said that he will discuss the matter with the President upon his return and then take a decision regarding the officer who will be appointed as the IGP.
However, the President’s recommendation for the post of IGP must be approved by the Constitutional Council in Parliament.
IGP Wickramaratne who was appointed on November 27, 2020 is the 35th IGP of Sri Lanka.
