Dengue risks rises as inclement weather continues

The Department of Meteorology has stated several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces.

Showers or thundershowers could occur in several areas elsewhere during the evening or night, it said.

Death toll rises to 21
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center states that the number of deaths reported due to the adverse weather has risen to 21 while affecting over 161,000 people.

Flood levels down ; landslide risks remain
The Irrigation Department reported that water levels in the Kelani River, Kalu River, and Attanagalu Oya are receding, reducing flooding in Gampaha, Ja-Ela, Wattala, Minuwangoda, and Katana. Engineer Sakura Dilthara confirms decreasing levels in low-lying areas like Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Wattala, and Colombo.

However, Dr. Wasantha Senadeera, a senior geologist from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) warns that landslide risks remain.

Dengue cases rise
Meanwhile, over 25,000 cases of dengue infections have been recorded within the five months so far this year, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).

The Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated that dengue breeding sites being detected in most of the schools is a dangerous situation.

Dr. Samaraweera also stated that there had been a significant surge in dengue cases last year, with nearly 90,000 reported by the end of 2023.

03 vehicles collide at railway crossing

03 vehicles have collided at the Merawala railway crossing on the Chilaw-Colombo main road.

The accident occurred at around 6.25 a.m. this morning (May 21) when a van, which had stopped behind a fuel bowser at the Chilaw Marawala railway crossing while it was closed for train traffic, was rear-ended by a prime mover transporting cement.

The prime mover had been unable to stop due to brake failure.

The van involved in the accident sustained significant damage and Chilaw Police are currently conducting further investigations.

Ramith Rambukwella arrives before CIABOC

Ramith Rambukwella – son of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella arrived at the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) earlier today (May 21) to record a statement.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali yesterday (May 20) ordered the further remand of Keheliya Rambukwella until June 03, following his arrest by the CIABOC over 03 complaints related to alleged corruption.

The court also granted permission to name Ramith Rambukwella as a suspect in the case.

Mahindananda seeks permission for home cooked meals

Former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who is currently in remand custody, has submitted a written request to prison authorities seeking permission to receive food from his home.

He is currently being held at the “M 2” ward of the Colombo Remand Prison along with around 10 other prisoners, according to reports.

It is also reported that former minister Keheliya Rambukwella is being detained in the same ward.
