Deshabandu Tennakoon takes office as 36th IGP

Deshabandu Tennakoon officially assumed duties as the 36th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka, following his appointment on Monday (Feb. 26). Tennakoon, who had been serving as the Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Acting IGP, received his official appointment letter from Secretary to the President, Mr. Saman Ekanayake, at the Presidential Secretariat.

The appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the new IGP aligns with the constitutional provisions outlined in Articles 41C.(1) and 61E.(b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. President Ranil Wickremesinghe exercised the authority vested in him to make this appointment.

Tennakoon had been serving as the Acting IGP since November 29, 2023, and his official assumption of duties marks a significant development in the leadership of the Sri Lanka Police force. The new IGP will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and addressing various challenges faced by the law enforcement agency.
