Doctor arrested over supermarket theft

A female doctor has been arrested on charges of having allegedly stolen dry rations worth Rs. 5000 from a supermarket.

According to media reports, the Kiribathgoda Police arrested the doctor in Makola on Monday (Aug 19).

She was seized by the security officials at the supermarket when she attempted to leave the supermarket with a Rs. 1700 tea leaves packet. 

After being handed over to the management, supermarket officials inspected her bag and found three chocolates, a milk powder tin, and a packet of sausages. 

The female doctor, who is attached to a state hospital in the area and is a 54-year-old resident of Kelaniya, had been handed over to the Kiribathgoda Police. 

During investigations, it was also found that she had a history of having stolen things belonging to the hospital management. 

The woman was produced at the Mahara Magistrate’s Court after which she was released on a surety of Rs. 200,000. (Newswire)

President offers condolences at Vatican Embassy (Pics)

President Anura Kumara Disanayake paid a visit to the Vatican Embassy this afternoon (24) to extend his condolences on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.

Upon his arrival, the President was warmly received by Most Reverend Archbishop Brian N. Udaigwe, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican to Sri Lanka.

Following a brief discussion with Archbishop Udaigwe, President Disanayake signed the book of condolence, conveying, on behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, heartfelt sympathies to the global Christian community on the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis.

In a statement, the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government  announces that all national flags at state institutions will be flown half-mast on April 26.
