Don’t buy eggs for more than 55 rupees!

Published

All Ceylon Egg Producers Association (ACEPA) Joint Secretary Dumishka Subasinghe requested the public not to buy eggs at prices higher than Rs.55.

He said that it costs Rs.46.95 to produce an egg in a farm, and an egg is sold to traders for Rs.49.

He said the reason for the shortage of eggs in Colombo is the daily supply of over 3 million eggs to the bakeries during this festive season. “By the New Year season next year (2023), the shortage of eggs and the issue of price increase will be completely resolved,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said that the demand for eggs from bakeries for the production of various sweets such as cakes and biscuits has increased during the festive season.

He said that between 8.5 and 9 million eggs were produced per day before the covid-19 pandemic. However, the egg production collapsed due to poultry farm owners selling the animals.

He said that some retailers and middlemen have raised the price of eggs up to Rs.57, and some middlemen are trying to raise the price of eggs by buying an egg for Rs.52 or Rs.53 from the poultry farm owners.

However, the Joint Secretary said the price of eggs will decrease after the 25th of this month, and added that the cost of maintaining chickens has tripled.
