Elderly lady lawyer murdered inside house

Kohuwala Police has said that an unmarried elderly lawyer who had lived alone in a house in Kalubowila, has been murdered on her bed and her property was stolen.

The deceased has been identified as Chandani Satharasinghe, 64, of De Silva Road, Kalubowila. Police said that he had a brother who is living in Canada.

She has been in regular contact with him on the phone and had contacted him for the last time on February 15.

A person residing in the Mirihana area, who is a friend of the Canadian resident brother, had come to the Kohuwala Police Station yesterday afternoon and filed a complaint after the latter’s relative told him to inform the Kohuwala Police regarding the loss of contact with her by phone after February 15.

It has been further revealed during the Police investigations, that an assailant or a group of assailants who entered the house had disconnected the electricity and killed her on the bed, covered her body with cloths and searched the belongings in the house. Mount Lavinia Acting Magistrate Ratna Gamage, who came to the scene of the crime, conducted the preliminary magisterial investigation and ordered the Police to place the body in the morgue of the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and conduct the postmortem.

Kohuwala Police are conducting further investigations under the directive of Mount Lavinia SSP Prasanna Brahakmanage.

Heavy rains expected in several areas today

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces.

Heavy rains above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern Province and in Anuradhapura district.

Strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

President meets German FM

As part of the official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, President Anura Kumara Disanayake met with German Foreign Minister Dr. Johann Wadephul yesterday evening (June 11) at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Berlin.

The discussion focused on identifying new avenues for expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, the digital economy, investment and vocational training, in line with the priorities of the Sri Lankan government.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany, Ms. Varuni Muthukumarana, Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Arjuna Herath, Director General for Europe and North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Trade Sugeeshwara Gunaratna and other officials.

76 arrested over illegal fishing

76 persons involved in various illegal fishing activities have been apprehended in multiple locations, during separate search operations conducted by the Navy from May 26 – June 07.

The operations also made way for the seizure of 20 dinghies employed for these illegal practices.
These operations were conducted by the Northern and Eastern Naval Command in Kadeikadu and Pudumathalan in Jaffna, Kalladichenai, Addukkupadu, Cod Bay, Poduwakattu, Kuchchaveli and Salpearu in Trincomalee as well as Palaminmadu in Batticaloa coastal areas. The individuals were held for their involvement in fishing with unauthorized nets, light-coarse fishing and night diving to harvest sea cucumbers. Apart from the 76 individuals and 20 dinghies, the Navy had also taken into custody 17 unauthorized fishing nets.

The suspects along with fishing boats and unauthorized gear held in these separate operations were handed over to the offices of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Echchalampaththu, Mullaitivu, Kuchchaveli, Cod Bay and Batticaloa for legal action.
