Published

Entitlements, allowances, and privileges granted to Members of Parliament, Ministers and ex-Presidents are to be reviewed under the new government.

These elected officials currently receive a host of benefits including salaries, pensions, housing, vehicles, staff, office equipment and security personnel, putting a significant strain on the taxpayers.

Recognizing the need to reduce this burden, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Prime Minister, who also serves as the Minister of Justice, Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council, and Local Government.

The proposal calls for the formation of a committee to study and recommend ways to rationalize these benefits.
The committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Mr. K.T. Chithrasiri, is  tasked with submitting a detailed report within two months.

Other members include Mr. D. Dissanayaka, a retired Secretary to the Ministry, and Mrs. Jayantha C.T. Bulumulla, a retired District Secretary.
