Ex ministers Mahindananda – Nalin jailed over Carrom board case

The Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar today (May 29) sentenced 02 former ministers over their involvement in a major corruption case linked to the importation of sports equipment, which is infamously known as the ‘Carrom Board’ case.

Ex-Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment while former Trade Minister – Nalin Fernando was sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in the case as the Lanka Sathosa Chairman at that time.

The case, filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), stated that 14,000 carrom boards and 11,000 checkers boards were imported by the Sathosa institution for distribution to sports clubs during the 2015 Presidential Election. The total financial loss to the state was estimated at Rs. 53.1 million.

The verdict was delivered by a three-judge bench comprising Justice Pradeep Hettiarachchi, Justice Pradeep Abeyratne, and Justice Mahesh Weeraman.

The indictment included six counts under Section 70 of the Bribery Act.

The court ruled that the charges brought against the accused had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was heard for over 06 years.

Sri Lankan youth injured in Iranian missile strike in Israel

A Sri Lankan youth has sustained injuries following an Iranian missile attack in the Bnei Brak area of Israel, according to Sri Lankan Ambassador to Israel, Nimal Bandara.

The injured individual has been identified as Vimukthi Madhusanka, a resident of Akuressa, who had traveled to Israel for construction-related employment.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Ambassador Bandara confirmed that arrangements are underway to ensure medical treatment for Madhusanka.

He further stated that embassy officials are actively monitoring the situation and urged any other Sri Lankans affected by the conflict to contact the embassy without delay.

Vraie Cally Balthazaar elected Colombo Mayor

National People’s Power (NPP)’s Vraie Cally Balthazaarhas been elected as the new Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council.

Following a closely contested secret ballot today (June 16),  Balthazaar secured 61 votes, narrowly defeating Riza Zarook of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), who received 54 votes.

The ballot was held since no single party obtained a clear majority at the recently concluded Local Government polls.

Meanwhile, Hemantha Kumara of the National People’s Power (NPP) was proposed as the Deputy Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council and was elected unopposed.

Senior official from Justice Ministry gives statement to CID

A senior official from the Ministry of Justice has given a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the alleged unlawful release of an inmate from Anuradhapura Prison under a presidential pardon granted for Vesak Poya.

Meanwhile, CID teams have been deployed to all 28 prisons across the island to investigate possible misuse of presidential pardons in the recent past.

Investigations are currently underway, and both the Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent and the Commissioner General of Prisons remain in remand over the incident.
