Cabinet approval has been granted to appoint a committee of experts to submit recommendations for the restructuring of Sri Lanka Railways.

Announcing the decision at the Cabinet briefing today (25), Cabinet spokesman Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the President has also urged to secure the experts’ recommendations as soon as possible in order to provide a more structured, quantitative and qualitative railway service.

However, he said that they do not intend to completely privatize the railway service.

He also said that he has tasked the CID to do an investigation on several irregularities and frauds that have occurred in Sri Lanka Railways, which is under his purview as the Transport minister.
