Father attacked with helmets during funeral procession

A father of three who warned a group of youths not to perform dangerous motorcycle shows in the funeral procession of a youth who died in a motorcycle accident has been attacked with helmets in Wadduwa.

The last rites of a 19-year-old boy named Dulanja Hesham Wijewardena, a resident of Thalpitiya in Wadduwa, who died in a motorcycle accident on August 07, were performed yesterday (09) at the Weragama Public Cemetery in Wadduwa.

A group of young people came in a procession of about 30 motorcycles and performed a risky one-wheeled show to pay their last respects.

Many people have disapproved of the performance but no one has said anything except a father of three.

The eyewitnesses said that nearly 30 young people who got angry attacked the man with helmets and the people had to save him with great effort.

Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Animal census report expected today!

The report on the recently conducted survey of wild animals responsible for crop damage is scheduled to be released today (April 23).

The survey focused on Toque Macaques, Langur monkeys, Grizzled Giant squirrels and Peacocks.

Preliminary findings estimate around 08 million macaques and 04 million langur monkeys in farmlands and village areas islandwide.

However, the Ministry claims that some farmers had exaggerated numbers of Toque Macaques. 

Therefore, officials had been compelled to do a second round of data collection in areas like Mihintale and Kekirawa for reassessment.

Heavy traffic after tree falls in Borella

A tree has fallen near the cemetery roundabout in Borella, damaging 07 vehicles and causing severe traffic congestion, police say.

Efforts are currently underway to remove the fallen tree and restore traffic movement.
