Five suspects were arrested in connection with the incident of setting fire to a house where a birthday party was being held in Thonikkal, Vavuniya.
Police said the suspects were arrested in Medavaithyakulam, Sivapuram, Pampemaduwa and Nelakkulama last evening (31).
Officers of the Vavuniya Police and Vavuniya Crime Investigation Division have conducted the raid to arrest the suspects along with three motorcycles on charges of aiding and abetting the crime.
The suspects aged 24, 27, 31 and 34 are to be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
On July 23, a group of unknown men entered a house where a child’s birthday party was held and attacked the people before setting the house on fire.
Ten people in the house were injured and a married couple who were taken to the hospital succumbed to injuries.
A two-year-old male child, seven-year-old and 13-year-old female children, four females between the ages of 19 and 41, and a 42-year-old male are still undergoing treatment at the Vavuniya Hospital.
Police said that it received CCTV footage showing a masked group setting fire to the house and attacking the residents. The suspects were arrested through investigations done based on the footage.
