The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas of Nilwala River valley, effective until 2.00 am on October 26.
It states that considerable rainfall has occurred in most of the Upstream and Middle Reach catchment areas of Nilwala River Basin as of 1.00 am today (Oct. 24).
By analyzing the current rainfall situation and river water levels of Hydrological Stations in the Nilwala River, there is a possibility a flood situation occurring in low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley situated in Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Kamburupitiya, Matara and Devinuwara divisional secretariat (DS) Divisions.
Residents in these areas and motorists passing by are requested to remain on alert.
Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take adequate precautions in this regard.
