Fmr. IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon remanded (Update)

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has been ordered to be remanded until tomorrow (March 20).

Tennakoon surrendered and appeared before the Matara Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala also announced in Parliament today that CID officers had conducted an inspection of a residence owned by Tennakoon, located at No. 76/A/7, 7th Lane, Gangani Gardens, Hokandara.

During the inspection, they discovered 795 bottles of foreign liquor and 214 bottles of wine, totaling 1,009 bottles, he added.

Additionally, the police seized a pistol, believed to be Tennakoon’s firearm, and two Apple phones.

Fmr. IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon surrenders to court

Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has arrived at the Matara Magistrate’s Court.

This case is scheduled to be taken up this morning (March 19).

Tennakoon’s court appearance is linked to a shooting incident near the W15 Hotel in Weligama on December 31, 2023.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an order on February 28th to arrest 8 police officers including Tennakona in connection with the shooting incident at the “W 15” hotel in the Weligama area of Matara.

Subsequently, Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon submitted a writ petition to the Court of Appeal through his lawyers on March (10) requesting that this arrest be prevented.

Accordingly, On March 17, the Court of Appeal dismissed the writ petition filed by Tennakoon without a hearing.

“Reports of Wijepala – Nissanka meeting, fake”

The Public Security Ministry has denied media reports claiming that the Public Security minister – Ananda Wijepala had met Nissanka Senadhipathi.

The Minister’s media secretary had clarified this in a letter to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya. 
Adding that the neither the Minister or a representative had ever met Senadhipathi as claimed, the letter calls for proper investigations into the fake news and legal action against those responsible.

Special allowance for policemen on duty at ‘Siri Dalada Vandanawa’

A special transport allowance and a combined allowance will be provided to police personnel assigned to ensure the safety of devotees attending the exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Siri Dalada Vandanawa) in Kandy, the police said.

The measure has been taken over the instructions of the Acting IGP, in consideration of the fact that these police personnel will be on continuous day and night duty for over 10 days, away from their regular stations and incurring additional personal expenses.

Ravi K’s Bill to repeal Online Safety Act, gazetted

The Bill to repeal the Online Safety Act, No. 9 of 2024, and other regulations concerning the Act, has been gazetted.

The Online Safety Bill was passed by a majority vote in Parliament on Jan. 24, 2024.

The Bill that has been gazetted was submitted by opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake.

On Feb. 28, 2025, MP Karunanayake submitted a private member’s Bill to the Parliament Secretary-General, aiming to repeal the controversial Online Safety Act.
