Foreigner dies swimming off Unawatuna

A 61-year-old Malaysian national died last evening while swimming in the sea off Unawatuna, police said.

Habaraduwa Police said the foreigner was likely dragged to sea by the rip currents in the area.

He was rescued by lifesavers but had died on admission to the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle.

Keheliya and 7 others further remanded

Former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella and 07 others have been further remanded until July 12 by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court over the import of substandard human Immunoglobulin vials.

This order was issued when the case was taken up before the Maligakanda Magistrate today (28).

Meanwhile, a suspect in the case – an officer of the Medical Supplies Division (MSD), has been released on bail.

Bus fares to be slashed by 5%

A decision has been taken to reduce bus fares by 5% with effect from July 01.

The reduction comes under the annual fare revision, and as agreed during a meeting between Transport Ministry officials and private bus operators earlier today (28).
Accordingly, the minimum fare has been reduced by Rs. 2 to Rs. 28.
