Four arrested over shooting of Co-Op Insurance Chairman!

Four persons including the Matara Co-Operative Insurance Corporation Chairman were arrested last evening (11) by the Western Province (South) Crime Division in connection with the incident of shooting and injuring Battaramulla Co-Operative Branch Chairman Darshana Lalith Samarawickrama at Gemunu Mawatha in Meegoda.

Among the other suspects who have been arrested are a businessman who owns buses, a soldier who left the army and a bus conductor.

The firearm used in the shooting, a motorcycle and a three-wheeler in which the shooters were travelling in were also taken into custody by the police.

It has been revealed that the shooting was carried out based on a contract given by former branch Chairman’s close relative Matara Chaminda to a resident in Warakagoda, Kalutara.

The Warakagoda resident is employed at a private security firm and he had given Rs.150,000 to an ex-army man residing in Kuliyapitiya several months ago to kill the new chairman of the Battaramulla Branch.

Police said that the suspects had tried on several occasions to shoot the new chairman but had failed.

A senior police officer said the shooter and the motorcyclist who helped him, Warakagoda resident and Matara Chaminda who gave the contract were among the arrested.

Investigations revealed that Matara Chaminda is a shareholder of the insurance corporation.

Matara Chaminda has revealed that the shooting was carried out with the knowledge of the former branch chairman.

Investigations revealed that the shooter had left the army in 2010.

The Warakagoda resident who gave the contract was identified as Lahiru Manaram and the shooter’s name is Prasanna Kumara.

The firearm used in the shooting has been made in China.

The suspects are to be produced in the Homagama Magistrate’s Court after being interrogated for 48 hours.

Helicopter crash during SLAF training session

A Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has reportedly crashed today (May 09).

It crashed during a training session at the Hingurakgoda Air Force Base.

Further reports indicate that the helicopter crashed into the Maduru Oya Reservoir.

American Cardinal elected as new Pope: Pope Leo XIV

Following a 02-day papal conclave, American Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new Pope yesterday (May 08) evening, Vatican time.

At 69, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

He becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV now assumes spiritual leadership of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

The election follows the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City, a day after participating in Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Heavy rains expected in the afternoon

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (May 09).

Showers may occur in Western province and in Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts in the morning too.

Fairly heavy rains above 50 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-central provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning.
