FR petition over Gr. 5 Scholarship exam, fixed for consideration

The Supreme Court has ordered for the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed seeking an order preventing the release of the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination results and the cut-off marks, to be taken up for consideration on November 18. 

The petitioners have requested the Supreme Court through their FR petition that an order be issued invalidating question paper 01 of the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination of which certain questions are alleged to have been leaked, and that the exam be held again.

The petition was taken up before Supreme Court Justice Arjuna Obeysekera today (24).

The court ordered the respondents to submit any objections to the petition before November 5, and any further objections related to those were ordered to be submitted before November 12.

Accordingly, the next hearing of the petition has been fixed for November 18 to confirm the facts of the petition.

The petitions were filed by the parents of several students who sat for the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination which was held on September 15, 2024.

Tense situation in Kahawatta as residents clash with police

Police had been compelled to use tear gas to control a tense situation that erupted between residents and police in Kahawatta following the funeral of a youth who was shot dead recently.

The funeral was held today (July 03) and the clash had broken out shortly afterwards.

Residents had expressed anger over the handling of the and had hurled stones at the police, reports say.

Apeksha Hospital to get new 5-storey building

The foundation stone for a new five-storey building at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital was ceremonially laid on today (03). 

This significant development project is being undertaken with the full supervision and dedicated labour of the Sri Lanka Air Force, while the financial sponsorship is generously provided by the Founder and Chairman of the Indra Traders Group, Mr. Indra Kumara Silva.
The proposed building, spanning 50,000 square feet, will house two residential wards capable of accommodating 80 patients. In addition, the facility will include a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a Pediatric Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit, thereby significantly enhancing the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized cancer care for children.

The event was graced by the Honourable Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, members of the Air Force Board of Management, the Director of the Apeksha Hospital, along with hospital officials.
